Case Study #2
4/29/15
2 month old male. 2 days after tongue-tie revision. Feeds about every 2 hours around the clock. He doesn’t sleep more than 2 hours at a time. Mom’s nipples are sore all the time, 4-5/10 on pain scale. Baby not able to suck. He is chomping, humping his tongue at the back and tongue thrusting. He is clicking and making other noises associated with breaking the suction. They are seeing a lactation consultant. Treated baby with craniosacral therapy (CST). Rechecked suck, baby actually sucking a little, less clicking and noises, tongue curving around my finger now. Tires quickly and reverts to old sucking habits. Mom states “better latch” when on the breast. Mom will do exercises with baby at home to help him learn to use his tongue more effectively.
5/2/15
Baby now sleeping 3-3 ½ hours during the night with a 4 hour nap during the day. Mom feeling more rested. Nipple pain 2-3/10. Clicking is better. Treated baby with CST. Suck greatly improved, better suck- swallow-breathe with breast feeding. Mom to continue exercises with baby, see lactation consultant and more CST.
5/9/15
Baby still sleeping 3-4 hours at a time. Nipple pain is 2-3/10. Still clicking a little with his suck. Treated baby with CST. Suck continues to improve and be stronger, with occasional breaking of suction. Mom to continue exercises with baby and more CST.
5/27/15
States baby slept 5 hours after the last CST. Feeds are about every 3-4 ½ hours. Still occasional clicking, but greatly improved. Sometimes has nipple pain 2-3/10 at the beginning of the feed, but goes away. No nipple pain between feedings. Treated baby with CST. Mom to continue exercises with baby until clicking is gone.
6/3/15
Mom states that baby is “sleeping through the night”.
7/26/15
Baby is 5 months old. No more nipple pain. “He nurses like a champ now, no clicking! It is too good to be true, and I know the CST helped!!“ Mom was very dedicated to doing the exercises to help him with tongue mobility and to improve the strength of his tongue and his suck.
